This page reflects Montpelier Section policy in December 2009.
If you are not yet satisfied, consider the nuances in this table:
| Your intention or expectation is: | Do this: | Then: | Because: |
| Post commercial messages or other 'spam' | Don't bother to try | Stop ![]() | All events must be approved by the Vice President. |
| Lead an event for people you specifically know | Join a mailing list which emails suggestions with a visible cc: list, such as the 'Trekkers'. | Stop ![]() | Montpelier Section hikes are available to the public. Members and nonmembers can attend. |
| Lead an event for people you probably know. | Send a message to the Section's listserver. | Stop ![]() | The listserver is unofficial: its events are not open to the public and no reports are published. |
| Avoid the appearance of your name on the internet, where you can be 'googled' | When entering the event on the calender, check 'Local media only' on the 'Publicity restrictions' item. | Continue![]() | The website informs indexing 'robots' to go away. Without indicating 'Local media only', your event may selected by the GMC to appear on the Green Mountain Club Calendar, which itself is indexed.. |
| Be absolutely certain your name will not appear on the internet | When entering the event on the calender, check 'Newsletter only' on the 'Publicity restrictions' item. | Continue![]() | We don't control the Times-Argus or World websites. It is possible that their entries can be indexed in the future. |
| This is a popular event and could easily be over-subscribed. | When entering the event on the calender, check 'Local media only' on the 'Publicity restrictions' item. | Continue![]() | |
| This is a challenging event and you want to discourage unprepared participants. | In the 'Full description' describe what abilities and experience is necessary. Select 'Difficult' if appropriate.. | Continue![]() | |
| The number of participants is limited, as with an overnight stay at an AMC hut. | In the 'Full description' include the maximum number of participants and deadline. | Continue![]() | |
| Subtle discouragement of the above conditions is not sufficient; you want to require contacting the leader. | In the 'Full description' omit the 'Meeting place' or the time. | Continue![]() | Of course, you must always provide a means of contacting you. (otherwise the event wouldn't be public and couldn't be sponsored by the Section.) |
| The meeting is in a private home, as many of our executive and planning meetings are. | Select 'Meeting' as the 'Event Category'. Add 'Call for directions.' to the 'Full description'. | Continue![]() | Our policy is that home addresses are not used. The 'Meeting' category signals the website committee, publicity coordinator, and newsletter editor that the wording may have to be changed. |
| The event is at a private location or the meeting place is private. | Add 'Call for directions.' to the 'Full description'. | Continue![]() | This is an extension of the 'home address' policy. |
| You don't want your event published in the local media. | Select 'Newsletter only' as 'Publicity restrictions'. | Continue![]() | |
| You don't want your event to be published on the website. | You may be satisfied by selecting 'Newsletter only' as 'Publicity restrictions' and making a note in 'Schedule preferences.' | Stop ![]() | Apperance on the website is strongly encouraged. The newsletter's deadline is 2-5 months before the schedule date. The website allows you to notify participants of a cancellation or rescheduling. |
| You're not sure how the event will be publicized. | Stop ![]() | In general, 'local' means Washington County newspapers. 'No restrictions' allow publicity in the Long Trail News and Burlington papers. The Publicity Coordinator uses discretion in selecting media outlets and using flyers and is not always able to control what the media publish. Remember that the Publicity Coordinator is a volunteer. | |
| You're still uneasy. | Submit your proposal by telephone or email, as indicated above. | Stop ![]() | The calendar is not required. It is merely a convenience to you and the Section's officers. |
Almost all modifications can be made without programming knowledge. To view the possibilities, select the menubar item 'Settings' and the drop-down submenu of 'System settings.' The color scheme is readily changed.
Two items, the header format and the style section, are editable. They do require knowledge of the hypertext markup language (html). A third item, 'site extras', was used to establish additional fields for events. Modifying these require programming knowledge.
The options for printing the schedule in Montpelier Section formats have been added alongside the Webcalendar software. They use the Webcalendar database but in no way affect the operation of Webcalendar.
Many of the display options can be modified with minimal programming skills. Example: the event date format for the newsletter events is in the form 'January 1, Friday'.
Webcalendar uses a relational database, implemented by the freely-available MySQL application. The database can be changed directly by the freely-available application phpMyAdmin. Doing so is discouraged and can only be done by the Website Committee. MySQL and phpMyAdmin are available on our current domain host, as they are on virtually all domain hosts.
