The minimum requirements for membership are a computer and the ability to use various browsers and word processors. No special software is required. Knowledge of hypertext markup language (html), cascading style sheets (css), Perl scripting, PHP Hyptertext Preprocessor (PHP), and webservers is helpful but not necessary.
We're a volunteer organization, so we can't address every issue. We intend the site to be available to members with the most antiquated equipment and the latest computer. Tell us if you are having problems. Let us know if you have ideas for improvement. Join us if you know the solutions.
The Website Committee was formed in 2002 to design and update the section's website. The purpose of the website is to encourage people to get outdoors into the forests and mountains of Vermont, and to facilitate the section's business, especially its record-keeping and communication among members
The committee meets quarterly, although much informal business is conducted via email. Discussions generally include distributing responsibility for maintaining the various parts of the site, considering editorial and design suggestions, and other technical issues. See the meeting pages for more details.
As we developed the site, we recorded our decisions and in many cases why we made them. To look at the process, go through the minutes of our meetings, beginning with the organizational meeting, or work backwards from the date the site went live for the Section's 2003 Annual Meeting.
The Section owns the domain name gmcmontpelier.org. The website host is Amhosting, which uses an Apache server running under Linux. The server supports Perl and PHP scripting. Pages are uploaded to the server from any home computer using the file transfer protocol (FTP). FTP capability is installed in practically all home computers.
We have several email addresses at gmcmontpelier.org. E-mail is forwarded from these accounts to the personal accounts maintained by the appropriate section members.
